How to Apply for a Government Grant

When applying for a government grant there are a number of factors you should consider.

We've outlined some basic steps that will assist you in applying for a government grant. By focussing your energies and following the process below you are likely to increase the your chances for recieving specific government grants.


Know Your Organization

1.) Know both your organizations strengths and weaknesses. Do not try to fit the organization to the grant, you'll have more success if you find a grant that fits your organization.

2.) Understand the purpose of your organizaiton, you cannot be everything to everyone, its important that the mission of the organization not become blurred in an attempt to say what grant organizers want to hear.

3.) Maintain a current history, mission and philosphy of your organization and refer to it often.

4.) Be sure to maintain current descriptions of projects or recent undertakings that give a clear picture of the organization and how it is carrying out its mission.

5.) Maintain a book of press clippings and community involvement that can be used as a reference.

Support your Organization

1.) When selecting a project be sure to that it supports the mission of the organization.

2.) Be realistic, while having large aspirations is great, its important that the project is "doable" and within the abilities of the current organizations structure.

3 Steps

1.) Brainstorm - be creative and think "outside the box".

2.) Create an Outline - addressing all aspects of project including positives and negatives, potential problems and likelihood of success.

3.) Detailed Description - write a detailed description expanding on the outline.

4.) Budget - put a price tag on the project.

Find the Funds
1.) Research sources of funding. Search the web for various grant opportunities, talk to other organizations in different areas who have gone through the process.
Read, Read and Research

1.) Thoroughly read the guidelines of any potential grant sources. Make a determination if its a "good fit" with the goals of the organization and the mission.

2.) Be sure to have a thorough understanding of the expectations the guidelines and deadlines.

3.) Research what has been funded in the past and understand the successes or failures of past projects.

Be Honest

1.) In completing a grant application be honest about the project and your organization.

2.) Learn from successes and failures.
